How eBay fees work (quick version)

eBay charges a final value fee — a percentage of the total the buyer pays (item + shipping), plus a small per-order fee. The percentage depends on category: most categories run around 13.6%, clothing runs higher, and a few niches (like sneakers over $150) run lower.

Promoted Listings add the ad rate you chose on top, charged only when the promotion leads to the sale. And remember your own costs: what you paid for the item, postage, and packaging materials — the calculator above folds all of it into one profit number.

Two easy ways to protect margin: price shipping honestly (you pay fees on shipping charged too), and list more inventory — fees only ever apply to things that actually sell.
